Iconography & Sacred Assembly

This Thangka is a complex "Mandala of Mandalas."
It maps the complete path to enlightenment through the union of Wisdom and Compassion.

The Five Great Mandalas of The Five Bodhisattvas

Five large palaces dominate the canvas, representing active, enlightened energy.

  • Central Mandala: Chenrezig Mandala

    • Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara) resides here.

    • He is the Lord of Compassion, holding a crystal rosary and lotus.

  • Upper Left: White Tara

    • She grants long life and healing, glowing with the radiance of the moon.

  • Upper Right: Green Tara

    • The Mother of all activity, she is ready to step down and protect you from fear.

  • Lower Left: Manjushri

    • The Lord of Wisdom, wielding the flaming sword that cuts through ignorance.

  • Lower Right: Vajrapani

    • The Lord of Power, wrathful and blue, he removes the deepest inner obstacles.

The Six Small Mandalas (The Source Buddhas)

Surrounding the Central Chenrezig are smaller spheres housing the Dhyani Buddhas and the Purifier.

  • Upper Most: Vairochana Buddha (The Illuminator).

  • Left Side (Upper): Ratnasambhava (The Jewel Born).

  • Left Side (Lower): Akshobhya (The Immovable).

  • Right Side (Upper): Amitabha (Infinite Light).

  • Right Side (Lower): Amoghasiddhi (All-Accomplishing).

  • Lower Most: Vajrasattva

    • He holds the Vajra and Ghanti (Bell), representing supreme purification.

The Outer Garland: 52 Dancing Dakinis

A protective ring of coin-like medallions surrounds the entire assembly.

  • Top & Bottom: 12 Dakinis on the top rail; 12 on the bottom rail.

  • Left & Right: 14 Dakinis on the left column; 14 on the right column.

  • Symbolism:

    • These 52 goddesses dance in ecstatic postures, holding various ritual implements.

    • They represent the movement of energy and the protection of the teachings.

Sacred Background & Landscape

This is a celestial diagram, not an earthly landscape. The space is filled with precise golden scrollwork.

  • Style: Geometric Serthang (Gold Art)

  • Visual Symbols:

    • Interwoven vines connect the mandalas, showing the unity of all deities

  • Spiritual Meaning:

    • Though the deities appear different, they all arise from the same golden source

  • Essence: A perfect blueprint of the awakened mind

Artisan Mastery

This piece represents months of mathematical and artistic precision.

  • Tradition: Newari Mandala Tradition

  • Complexity:

    • Painting 11 central deities and 52 unique border figures requires incredible focus

  • Detailing:

    • Each "coin" figure is a complete miniature painting in itself

  • Spirit:

    • The artist maintained a meditative state to ensure the geometry
      remains spiritually active

Spiritual Application

This Thangka is a universal tool for spiritual practice. It covers every need of the practitioner.

  • Heart Mantra:

    • OM MANI PADME HUM (Chenrezig) centers the practice.

  • Meditation:

    • Focus on Manjushri for exams/study, or White Tara for health.

  • Blessing:

    • Vajrapani and the Border Dakinis create a shield against negativity.

  • Purpose:

    • A "Grand Union" thangka for practitioners who want all major blessings in one space.

Sacred art chooses you as much as you choose it. Here is why this Thangka belongs in your space.
